Most resumes are filtered out by software, not people. Here are the seven formatting and wording mistakes that quietly cost you interviews.
More than three out of four companies in India now screen applications with an Applicant Tracking System before a recruiter opens a single file. If your resume confuses that software, your experience never gets a fair reading.
The mistakes that cost you interviews
- Multi-column graphic templates that scramble when parsed.
- Photos, icons and text boxes that the scanner cannot read.
- A generic objective line instead of a sharp professional summary.
- Duties written as responsibilities rather than measurable results.
- Missing keywords from the actual job posting you are applying to.
- Dates and job titles formatted inconsistently across roles.
- Sending a PDF export from a design tool instead of a clean document.
What to do instead
Use a single-column layout, standard section headings, and bullet points that quantify impact — revenue, percentages, team size, time saved. Then mirror the language of your target job description so the scanner and the recruiter both see a match.
If you would rather not rebuild it yourself, I rewrite resumes to be scanner-safe and achievement-led, usually within 24 to 48 hours.
