Applying for an Indian Passport Online: A Step-by-Step Guide

2 August 20267 min readBy Goldy Mehra

The passport portal trips up thousands of applicants every day. Here is the exact order of steps, the documents to keep ready, and the mistakes to avoid.

Passport rejections are almost never about eligibility — they are about mismatched names, wrong address proof, or an appointment booked under the wrong scheme.

Documents to prepare first

  • Aadhaar with your current address, spelled exactly as you will type it.
  • Birth proof: birth certificate, or school leaving certificate.
  • Address proof in your own name, or a parent's with a relationship proof.
  • Annexures, if you are applying for a minor or after a name change.

The order that works

Register on the passport portal, choose fresh or re-issue correctly, fill the form offline where possible, pay the fee, then book the appointment at your own regional office. Print the receipt with the ARN before you close the session.

One spelling difference between your Aadhaar and your form is enough to send you home from the appointment. If you would like it checked and filled for you, send me your documents and I will handle the whole submission.
